I have always loved books and the idea of reading more than I watch TV, but I have lacked the desire in practice. In the last five years I can say that I have read a handful of great books and I’m always intrigued to shop around for new ones to dive right into. Here is the catch, I am great at starting books, but I haven’t mastered the art of finishing all the books I start.
More recently, I have been reading a lot of books about veganism, metaphysics and religion. Many of the books that I read are on heavy topics and as such, harder to see all the way through as easily as I could a juicy fiction novel. Nevertheless, I love reading books that help me grow as a person and increase my brainpower. 😉 While a good novel is always fun to read and has the ability to suck you in, I have enough guilty pleasures lined up on my DVR for every day of the week.
A few days ago while shopping at Barnes and Nobles for my hubby’s birthday gifts, I ran into a few books I thought I would pick up for myself. Currently I am reading about 4 books, and although that seems like a lot, I like being able to switch it up depending on how I am feeling on any given day. One book in particular that caught my eye while shopping is Main Street Vegan by Victoria Moran.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I am a Vegan. Truth is, my intentions do not go without missteps, but my goal is to be as pure a vegan as possible. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across Moran’s book by chance on my way to check out; instances like these continue to show me how being a vegan has never been a choice, but my intended destiny. Whenever I have strayed away from veganism to make exceptions for eggs and dairy, serendipity has a way of pulling me right back in. I have said it before and I will say it again, veganism found me and not the other way around.
Many say that the lifestyle I live is idealistic and irrational, but I have been guided by something bigger than me to take the righteous road, one that leads to the most overall good and the least harm possible to not only the animals that we coexist with, but also our very fragile ecosystem. The choices I make stem from beliefs that we shall do no harm and that our hearts should extend beyond our comfort zone, reaching out to those who we may not fully identify with, such as the helpless animals that are abused and mistreated to fulfill our own selfish desires.
One thing I love about this book is that Moran lists an easy vegan recipe after every chapter. I am going to make an attempt to blog every Tuesday until I finish the book and feature a vegan dish, most likely out of Moran’s book. I am not much of a cook, but I want to make an effort to refine my cooking skills and hopefully this will give me the practice I need.
That’s all folks! Catch ya later. 🙂
