But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
The man said,“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called woman,
For she was taken out of man.”
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Genesis 2:21-24
As I dive deeper into the bible, I find great meaning in the subtle messages that, despite always being aware of, I didn’t pay much attention to. The verse above is one of the first that really spoke to me as I went back and started reading the bible from the beginning. These words spoke to me not only as a wife but as a future mother.
Ever since getting married, I feel that I have truly found my purpose in this life. Not only did I make the decision to follow my husband to the “ends of the world,” but I have also rediscovered my faith in the process. Despite always considering myself a spiritual person, I have struggled with my faith in Christ.
Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, these are all religions I have identified with in one way or another despite being raised a Catholic, yet it wasn’t until I decided to redirect my life and work on myself as a follower of Christ, that I truly found peace. By fully accepting Jesus as my savior and releasing all fear, subsequently holding only faith in the Lord and my life, have I reached a level of happiness that I might have considered in the past to be unachievable.
In Genesis 2, God created woman from the rib of the man. He chose to create a woman in order to complete the man and be his “helper.” While I believe greatly in women’s rights and the advances that we have made over the years, I myself am still a bit of a traditionalist. I will be forever grateful to the women who came before me and blazed a trail for all the amazing women of this nation, nevertheless, I have never felt the need to stand-alone or to prove myself to the world. And while this has not always been the case, most recently I have found a strong foundation of self worth within myself that no money can buy; I have found the greatest value in having united with my husband to become “one flesh” the day we wed.
I have always been an old soul, someone who has dreamed of my home and my family, but as I get older and my dreams come to fruition, I am even more aware of how deep-rooted my nurturing instincts are. Having made a vow to my betrothed and becoming his wife, I take great responsibility in my duties to him and to our future children. While we may wait some time to have babies, the desire is very much there for the both of us. It is at that time that we will be blessed with the greatest gift God can give us and I hope to honor Him by raising a strong child that He will be proud of. A child that will one day grow up to become “one flesh” with another special child of God.
